    A laser engraving machine uses a high-power laser to map artwork,patterns, and designs on to objects. Since they do not use any ink or utilizetool bits to do the engraving, laser engravers are very fast as they makes nophysical contact with the engraving surface. The laser tube which houses the laser is the heartof the laser engraving machine. The laser beam is focused on the engravingsurface with the help of the controller. And the workpiece holder firmly holdsthe workpiece or the engraving surface as laser moves over it.

   Before Engraving A pattern or a design template is first prepared on the computer. Necessary adjustments are made to it to makethe pattern fit perfectly on the workpiece or the engraving surface. Just likeprinting on paper and stationery using a laser printer, specifications such asthe outline, the font size and the stretch factor are fixed before sending thedesign template to the engraving machine. Before the engraving process canbegin one must set the engraving surface on the workpiece holder of themachine. Most machines come with adjustable workpiece holders to hold theengraving surface firmly. These types of engraving machines, where the surface remains steady while a laser runs over it, are the most common type of laser engravers, although other types which utilize stationary lasers or galvo mirrors are also used.
  The Engraving Process Once the laser engraving machine receives the command from the computer with the digital version of the design template it gets ready to begin the engraving process. The engraving procedure does not start until the work piece is set and focused within the focal point of the laser. An outline is sometimes made on the workpiece with alow-intensity light beam to make sure the workpiece sits perfectly in positionaccording to the design template. The engrave command is either manually given(or is automatically accepted by the engraving machine on a pending task) afterthe safety lid is closed to begin engraving on the workpiece. The controllerthen moves over the workpiece to etch the required design pattern. The laserheats up in a tiny fraction of a second and acts only on the designated pointson the engraving surface, vaporizing, glassing, or flaking off the material. Asthe engraving process is in progress a ventilator with an exhaust eliminatesany unwanted material from the engraving area. The engraving takes place fromtop to bottom, which means the design is engraved on the workpiece horizontallyas the laser moves in a continuous left-to-right motion over the engravingsurface. Depending on the size and the material of the workpiece, the finenessof the design or pattern, and the power of the laser most engraving tasks rangefrom a few minutes to about half an hour.
After EngravingAfter the design template isefficiently mapped on to the surface of the workpiece, it is then cleaned orpolished depending on the material. For engravings done on glass, the glass iscleaned with a non-abrasive cloth and a cleaning fluid. Engravings done on woodrequire proper cleaning with a brush and subsequent polishing for a finefinish. Likewise, engravings done on metals, stones, plastic, textiles and jewellery require effective cleaning and polishing. 

 Laser engraving machine are widely used today to efficiently and accurately engrave intricate artwork or product designs and layouts on a range of surfaces. The advantage of using laser over other traditional methods of engraving is that the laser engravers cut in highly accurate millimeter-specific engravings, which traditional engravers often fail to deliver. Also, the laser beam can be controlled to make engravings on softer materials such as rubber and jeans fairly easy. 

Laser engravers are often used to engrave architectural layouts on base surfaces (for housing models); to cut in data networks on chips and data boards; to create custom signs and displays; to engrave logos, text on rubber stamps; to engrave on awards, trophies,doorplates and plaques; and even for engraving on phone and laptop covers. The applications of laser engravers are evolving every day with increased personalization of stationery, office products and luxury items. And with the development of specially designed 'laser-friendly' materials the trend of laser engraving will only gain further momentum. Thus, looking forward to the futurewe are likely to heavily utilize laser engraving for a whole new range ofpurposes.
